Assignment 11

Research projects

Here are the proposals for the first round of DLI projects (1994-1998).

http://www.csdl.tamu.edu/DL94/ (The Illinois proposal is by Schatz, The Michigan proposal is by Birmingham)
http://elib.cs.berkeley.edu/admin/proposal/proj-des/proj-des.html
http://www.alexandria.ucsb.edu/docs/proposal/index.html
http://www.informedia.cs.cmu.edu/dli1/reports/dli1Proposal.html
http://www.computer.org/computer/dli/r50061/r50061.htm?SMSESSION=NO

Generate a random number between 0 and 5 (take a quarter out of your pocket, subtract 1900 from the date on it, divide by six and take the remainder). Then if the result is zero choose Illinois, 1 Michigan, 2 Berkeley, 3 UCSB, 4 CMU and 5 Stanford.

Look at the proposal and try to understand what they were promising to do. Then go to the project website

http://www.dli2.nsf.gov
and/or
http://www.dli2.nsf.gov/dlione/ (will lead you to them)

and try to see what was done.

Assignment:

Write a few pages (not more than roughly 3) trying to outline how what they did compared with what they said they would do.

Then write one paragraph in response to a Congressman who asks whether the $24M spent on DLI-1 was justified in the end.
