Invited talk:
Information Retrieval
Room 301, Wednesday Oct 16, 3:20-5:00pm
Plan of the talk
I will start by introducing Information Retrieval as a
research area spanning Information Science, Computer Science, Library Studies,
Cognitive Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction and other disciplines. I will
present what, in my opinion, are the main problems in IR, and some approaches
taken to address these problems.
While relevance is a central issue in
IR, I will consider that it was addressed in the previous week.
In the second part of the talk, I will concentrate on the problem that I
explored during my PhD, will describe in some detail my/our approach to Mediated
Information Access, and will present my results and plans for future work.
Readings
- An IR
overview - The first chapter of Richard Belew's book, "Finding Out About",
is a quite good overview of what IR is. The book also has a website, from where more
information can be obtained.
- An
introduction to IR - Keith van Rijsbergen's book, "Information
Retrieval", is a bit old, but still relevant. Important for the historic
perspective.
- MLIS 550 - IR -
The course that I taught in Spring 2002 has a wide variety of articles,
available online, for those interested to explore IR in more depth.
Start with the first one and continue as far as your stamina and
interest can take you. Papers on Mediated Information Access, as well as my
thesis, are available on my webpage.
