Fundamental issues, problems, and approaches to digital libraries, reflecting differing efforts and thinking in a number of fields and enterprises. Variety of digital library types, collections and resources, nationally and internationally. Organization, services, use, and evaluation of digital libraries. Economic, legal, preservation, and management issues; relation to traditional libraries. Research and developmental projects and initiatives. Trends into the future.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL LIBRARIES [Part of the course] University of Zadar (Croatia) Spring 2011
Description
Concentration on four themes within the course Introduction to Digital Libraries that deals with a number of basic dimensions of digital libraries and the their social environment. Themes covered here are:
1. Technology and digital libraries - through examples of e-books
2. Institutions - diversity of context and content
3. Services - transformation to digital environments
4. Evaluation - approaches, criteria, methods, results
Main learning objective is for students to become familiar with fundamental concepts and basic literature in order to be able to continue with own studies and start with professional and research work according to their interests.

PRINCIPLES OF SEARCHING [17:610:530 ]  online version - e530; Spring 2010
Description
Study of effective searching of electronic information resources on behalf of users involving both, general principles of searching and practical search exercises. Subject, structure, and vocabularies of a variety of information resources. Models of information retrieval (IR) systems and search engines. Methods for effective searching and variations in search strategies and tactics. User information seeking and the process of mediation and interviewing involved in user modeling. Trends in dismediation of searching and new roles for searchers, including cooperative searching, search assistance, source recommendation and evaluation, and bibliometric impact searching. Includes laboratory exercises using a variety of resources from vendors, such as Dialog, Scopus, and others, as well as those found on the web and in digital libraries.

Description
Nature of information, communication and media processes. Their roles in individual, social, and institutional contexts. Basic problems addressed in research. Emphasis on the conceptual linkage among these processes.

Description
Critical examination of the research in human information behavior, that is in interactions between people, the various forms of information, and the situations or contexts in which they interact. Theories, models, and methods used. Seminal authors and works. Relation between such behavior and information system design and relevant technologies. 

EXPERIMENT AND EVALUATION IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS  [16:194:619] Spring 2002
Description
Measures, models, and methods for macroevaluation of impact of information systems within their environment and for microevaluation of performance of systems components. Experimental methods and experiments in information retrieval, information seeking, and library processes.
